“ It is by teaching that we teach ourselves.”-Henri
Frederic Ameil
I believe that each and every child has the right to an education. An
education that is a lifelong learning experience. Education
does not only teach them the academics of life, but life skills that
will enable them to continue to learn and grow on their own. I
plan to do this by providing a safe, positive and creative environment
within my classroom.
I believe that each student is responsible
for their own behavior. Barbara Coloroso states that students
are responsible for their actions and that they are to solve the
problems on their own. By doing this the students are
taking ownership of the problems created and leaves them with the
sense of dignity, that they are able to solve their own problems.
I believe
that students who can solve their own problems will be able to solve
anything that comes their way in life.
Barbara Coloroso believes in three primary principles: kids are worth
it, treat students how you want to be treated, and what works for you,
works for me. I also believe in these statements
because in order for the students to have a quality education,
one must believe
and say that kids are worth it. Treating students with respect
and how you would like to be treated is very important, especially
in
learning life skills. If one
treats their students with respect, you have set up the environment
for them to treat you and others with respect as well. I
believe this is very important in the development of children. Respect
will go a long way in life once it is learned and practiced.
I also believe that students need to know they are appreciated
and that they can do whatever they put their mind to. I will
do this by providing a positive learning environment. Praise
can go a long way, when students know they are doing something
well.
Madeline Hunter’s theory works well to promote a positive environment.
Instead of calling on a students misbehavior, use their name in an
example to help bring them back to focus, or write them a positive
note about something you liked that they did or how they did something. I
believe that little steps like this help bring students back to
focus and help bring up their self-esteem. It is important
for students to have a positive outlook, not only about life, but
about themselves
as well. I hope to achieve this by
providing them with the best education they can receive,
by doing things they may not otherwise be able to experience.
My hope is to challenge students, while also supporting them
so that they are able to reach and achieve their goals. Richard
Curwin and Alan Mendler also believe in keeping students challenged. By
keeping the student challenged and always busy, there is no time
for students not be to learning. I plan to do this by providing
myself as a resource, guide and educator to these students. I
will be firm,
but also support the needs of my students.
Students learn best by example and practice. I plan to do this by relating
the course material to their own personal lives as much as possible. If
students can relate new information, to previous information, they
have a stronger chance of remembering and learning the new information
and will be able to
do so in their practice. Practices such as hands on experimentation,
partner or group work, and also by sharing with others what they have
done, why and how they did what they did, all help students learn and
relate the information in some way, shape or form.
I strive to reach the individual needs of my students while also pertaining
to the needs of all. I will make every effort to connect
with my students on a personal level, while maintaining my role as
their teacher. My students will be learning through the direction and guidance
of a
well-trained professional teacher, who believes in the success of each
and every student.
This is my philosophy of what I believe based on my experiences and education
so far. As time changes and I have more
experience in the classrooms and school systems I believe that
parts of my philosophy will change as well.
"Wisdom comes from observation and experience,
not just education."
